FROM BATTLEDORE AND SHUTTLECOCK TO BADMINTON

Did you know that badminton originated in ancient civilizations in Europe and Asia, with a game called “Battledore and Shuttlecock” played in ancient Greece, China, and India.

The modern version of badminton developed in the mid-19th century in British India, where it was popularized among British military officers stationed in Pune (then Poona).

The game spread rapidly and was later introduced to the rest of India.

India has produced several world-class badminton players, including Prakash Padukone, who won the All England Championship in 1980, and P.V. Sindhu, who became the first Indian woman to win a silver medal at the Olympics in 2016. Saina Nehwal, another prominent player, has also brought numerous laurels to the country.

Playing badminton enhances physical fitness by improving agility, endurance, and coordination while keeping the mind sharp and focused through strategic thinking and quick decision-making.

At The Heritage School North Campus one of the best CBSE schools in Dehradun the students have honed various techniques like deceptive shots (drop shots, smashes, and clears), effective footwork, and strategic placement of shots. The coaches have taught them how to master serves, vary shot speeds, and anticipate the opponent’s moves. This plays a crucial role in gaining a competitive edge and securing victory.

Badminton champions at North Campus are superheroes amongst their peers.
